Is suicide a criminal Offense?

Suicide is not a criminal offense in India, and there is no punishment for those who attempt or complete suicide. However, Indian law does have provisions to protect individuals who attempt suicide from punishment, recognizing that mental health issues often underlie such actions.

The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, decriminalizes attempted suicide and prohibits punishment or prosecution of individuals who attempt suicide. Instead, it mandates that they receive appropriate mental healthcare and support.

It’s important to note that while suicide itself is not a crime, there may be legal consequences if a suicide is connected to other illegal activities or if someone is found to have contributed to another person’s suicide.

The focus in India is on prevention, mental health support, and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues. It’s always recommended to seek help from mental health professionals and support organizations if you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts or mental health issues.
