Crime rate in Uttar Pradesh

With over 200 million inhabitants, it is the most populous state in India. The state capital is Lucknow, and Uttar Pradesh is known for its rich cultural heritage, historical significance, and diverse demographics. It’s also one of the largest contributors to India’s economy and plays a crucial role in the country’s politics and social dynamics.

Uttar Pradesh (UP) is one of the most populous states in India and, like any other state, experiences various types of crime. Crime rates can vary depending on multiple factors including urbanization, economic conditions, social factors, and law enforcement efforts.

Uttar Pradesh has taken measures to address crime through law enforcement initiatives, community engagement, and other programs aimed at improving safety and security.

Uttar Pradesh recorded 6.08 lakh total crimes in 2021 which was about 7.5% less as compared to 6.57 lakh crimes registered in 2020 (the year of Covid lockdown and restrictions), and 3.2% less than 6.28 lakh cases registered in 2019.

However, cases of rape, kidnapping and abduction have registered a slight increase in 2021 as compared to 2020; however, the same two crimes registered a low when compared to 2019.

Senior police officers in UP insist that comparing the crime statistics of other states with UP in absolute numbers would be unfair as it happens to be the most populous state in the country. Crime statistics under various heads when computed on per lakh population basis forms a common denominator for all states and hence provide a clearer picture of the crime situation in different states.

Uttar Pradesh is always in headlines for good and bad reasons, as the culprit is not even recognized in 7 year old girl murder case. Whether the minor was raped that is also a question mark. Hopefully, soon the police investigation will put some light on the case and offender will be punished.
