Chelsea beaten 1-0 by Middlesbrough in Carabao Cup

Premier League giants were defeated by the championship division club in the Carabao Cup first leg of the Semi-Finals on Tuesday, Chelsea beaten 1-0 by Middlesbrough. The Blue’s lackluster form is continued at the Carabao Cup. Chelsea missed many chances as Championship side Middlesbrough earned a slender advantage in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at a boisterous Riverside Stadium.

Middlesbrough is in 12th position in the championship league and Chelsea is in 10th position in Premiere league. Middlesbrough and Chelsea are both missing some key players due to injury. Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson is on international duty to play in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Starting Eleven

Mauricio Pochettino’s starting eleven for this game was D.petrovic in goal. Tiago Silva and Axel Disasi are in centre-back positions Colwill and Malo Gusto playing as side-backs. Enzo Fernandez and Caicedo are in Mid-field Raheem Sterling is in the left wing and Noni Madueke is in the right wing. Conor Gallagher is playing behind the striker Cole Palmer.

Coach of Middlesbrough Michael Carrick’s starting eleven for this match at their home boisterous Riverside Stadium was Glover in goal. Three center-back players were D.fry, L. Engle, and R. VandenBerg. Jones Played as a left wing-back and Alex Bangura Played as a right wing-back. Daniel Barlaser and Jonny Howson in Mid-Field. First Half

Chelsea came as a Heavy favorite to win the match, but nervousness was seen in the very first minute when Axel Disasi made a strong challenge on Ivorian forward Emmanuel Latte Lath. But VAR isn’t in use in the Carabao Cup, perhaps letting the Blues off. Middlesbrough coach Michael Carrick makes a substitution for Emmanuel Latte Lath with youngster Josh Coburn coming on in his place. It was a massive blow to an already depleted Boro side. Alex Bangura was injured within 20 minutes in the game Boro’s coach made another change and brought Matthew Clarke in place of Injured Alex Bangura.

In the 32nd minute, a poor pass from veteran English midfielder Josh Howson allowed the former Manchester City attacker to race through on goal but Cole Palmer missed that golden opportunity. In the 37th minute, a superb counterattack from Carrick’s men was coolly finished off by English midfielder Hayden Hackney. Middlesbrough took the lead with the one-goal. Chelsea was extremely wasteful, and Palmer was the main culprit. He should have equalized in the 45+4th minute when Boro goalkeeper Tom Glover spilled Enzo Fernandez’s shot. The first half of this game ended with a score line of 1-0.

Second-Half

Chelsea Started the second half in the same way as the first half but Boro’s speedy English winger Isiah Jones was a real threat throughout and caused Levi Colwill problems on the right flank. He sent several dangerous crosses into the Blues’ box that his teammates couldn’t convert. In the 67th minute, Daniel Barlaser missed the chance to double the lead for the Middlesbrough.

Chelsea Trying too hard to put pressure on Boro’s defense but Boro stood firm and defended right to the death to keep Chelsea at bay. It was a case of the same old story for Pochettino whose side squandered 18 opportunities throughout. After the final whistle of the game score remained 1-0 West London side was Defeated in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

Post-Match

Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick said “We had to show a bit of everything and I’m buzzing. I know what it means to everyone, it was fantastic for me to see so many people so happy and it’s pretty special.

“We will be ready for the second leg and attack the game and see what happens. Football is about dreaming, and things happen like tonight which probably shouldn’t happen. We go there with our eyes wide open and know what to expect, but it won’t stop us trying.

Chelsea will host Middlesbrough on 23 January at Stamford Bridge for the second leg of the Carabao Cup.
