One of the victims told The Hindu that at least three Indians were forcibly sent to fight with the Russians on the Russia-Ukraine border. At the same time, an agent said that since November 2023, about 18 Indians are stranded on the Russia-Ukraine border. It is being said that one person has also died in the war.

According to the report, some Indians had volunteered to join the international force formed to fight Russian forces in Ukraine in 2022. This is the first time when information about the presence of Indians in the war has come to light.

The family of one of the victims is from Hyderabad. The family contacted AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi. In this regard, on January 25, Owaisi wrote a letter to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the Indian Embassy in Moscow, seeking government intervention for their return, while the remaining victims are from Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. The Hindu has not disclosed the names of the victims.

One of the victims from Uttar Pradesh said that three of them were given basic training in handling arms and ammunition by the Russian army. The victim said that he had reached here in November 2023. He was clearly told that he would not be sent to the battlefield. He was promised a salary of Rs 1.95 lakh and an additional bonus of Rs 50,000 per month. Apart from a bonus of Rs 50,000 for two months, he did not receive any money.

The victim said that he could not use the phone for several days. He managed to contact his family only after escaping from the war zone. He said that repeated appeals to the Indian Embassy in Moscow were ignored. They neither have correct documents nor money. The government is not helping them and their lives are in danger.

At present the Foreign Ministry has refused to comment on this matter. According to sources, the Indian Embassy is keeping an eye on all such complaints. Sources said that many of those who are claiming forced labour at the border do not want to leave the country. At the same time, some people do not want to come back without earning some money.

The matter came to light when Owaisi wrote to Minister of External Affairs S jaishankar and the Indian Embassy in Moscow on January 25, 2024, urging them to facilitate the return of the three Indian Nationals. Owaisi reiterated this plea on social media recently.
