Boxer Vijender Singh left Congress and joined BJP. Vijender Singh had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on a Congress ticket from South Delhi seat, but he had to face defeat. India’s first Olympic medalist in boxing and Congress leader Vijender Singh, who won the bronze medal in boxing in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, joined the BJP on Wednesday.

Vijender Singh took membership of BJP in the presence of BJP General Secretary Vinod Tawde, Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly and party candidate from South Delhi Ramveer Singh Bidhuri.


Vijender Singh belongs to the Jat community, which has political influence on a large number of seats in Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Boxer Vijendra Singh on joining BJP said, “I am very excited to join BJP. I want to work for the development and progress of the country…”

The former Bhupendra Singh Hooda government had given Vijendra the post of DSP in Haryana Police as a mark of respect for his achievements in boxing. In 2008, Vijendra won the bronze medal in the Beijing Olympics. After this, Hooda government made him HPS. Even when he became a professional boxer in 2015, a controversy had arisen regarding his DSP post, but the government retained him on the post of DSP Sports. Vijendra, one of the most successful boxers of India, left his amateur career and turned professional.
