What was Godhra Train Burning Incident in 2002?

The Godhra Train Burning Incident of 2002 occurred on February 27, 2002, in the town of Godhra in the Indian state of Gujarat. It resulted in the deaths of 59 Hindu pilgrims who were returning from the town of Ayodhya after a religious ceremony at the site of the demolished Babri Masjid, a mosque that was destroyed by Hindu extremists in 1992.

The incident took place when a train compartment, known as S-6 of the Sabarmati Express, was set on fire. The passengers in this compartment were mostly Hindu pilgrims returning from Ayodhya. According to the official version of events, a group of Muslim extremists attacked the train, causing it to catch fire and leading to the deaths of 59 passengers, most of whom were women and children.

The incident sparked widespread violence against Muslims in Gujarat, resulting in the deaths of over 1,000 people, mainly Muslims. Many believe that the violence was organized and that the state government, led by Chief Minister Narendra Modi (now the Prime Minister of India), was complicit in the attacks. There have been multiple investigations into the incident, including the Nanavati-Mehta Commission, but no conclusive evidence has been found to prove who was responsible for setting the train on fire.

The Godhra train burning incident and the subsequent violence have been the subject of much controversy and debate in India. It has raised questions about religious intolerance, communalism, and the role of the state in preventing and controlling communal violence
