On Saturday, Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf asked the Pakistan Election Commission to announce the final results for the country’s general elections by midnight or face protests, news agency PTI reported. However, hours after issuing the statement, PTI workers commenced loud protests outside RO offices in areas where results are awaited, with the party’s official X handle posting videos of the same. Imran Khan’s close aide and media advisor, Zulfi Bukhari, spoke to the news agency Reuters, confirming that the party banner for independent candidates backed by the jailed former PM’s party, will be announced within the next 24 hours.

Nawaz and his brother Shehbaz Sharif’s party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have agreed to form a coalition government in the Centre and Punjab.

Meanwhile, candidates backed by the party of jailed Pakistani opposition leader Imran Khan Plans to form a government, a senior aide to the former prime minister said on Saturday. Khan was granted bail in 12 cases linked to the May 9 attacks on military installations on Saturday.

Elections were held for 265 seats in the national assembly and a political party needs 133 seats for a simple majority. Voting in Pakistan concluded at 5 pm on Thursday amidst escalating militant attacks and allegations of electoral misconduct. After the parliamentary polls, the newly elected parliament will select a prime minister. If no single party secures a majority, the party with the largest portion of assembly seats can form a coalition government.

Candidates backed by the party of jailed Pakistani opposition leader Imran Khan plan to form a government, a senior aide to the former prime minister was quoted by Reuters as saying on Saturday. He also urged supporters to peacefully protest if final election results are not released.

Former Prime Minister and president of Pakistan Muslim League (N) Shehbaz Sharif held the meeting. Senator Ishaq Dar, Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Maryam Aurangzeb, Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, Senator Azam Nazir Tarar, Attaullah Tarar and Khawaja Imran Nazir participated in the meeting. Issues related to government formation were discussed in the meeting, the party said in a tweet.

Pakistan’s President Arif Alvi said that Pakistan could have avoided the crisis stemming from the delay in election results if electronic voting machines (EVMs) were in use. In a post on X, the president said, ““EVM had paper ballots that could be counted separately by hand (like it is being done today) BUT it also had a simple electronic calculator/counter of each vote button pressed. Totals of every candidate would have been available & printed within five minutes of closing of poll.”
