Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held a bilateral meeting with Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad Al Thani. After the interaction, Modi took to X and said: “Had a wonderful meeting with HH Sheikh @TamimBinHamad. We reviewed the full range of India-Qatar relations and discussed ways to deepen cooperation across various sectors. Our nations also look forward to collaborating in futuristic sectors which will benefit our planet.

The Indian diaspora gathered outside PM Modi’s hotel in Qatar to extend a warm welcome. They displayed the Indian Tricolour and brought gifts for PM Modi, expressing their enthusiasm with chants of “Modi Modi” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai.”

PM Modi greeted the crowd assembled outside his hotel in Doha to extend a warm welcome. Some people offered him gifts such as books. As he engaged with the crowd, people also took pictures with PM Modi.

PM Modi also met his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Doha, aiming to enhance the diplomatic ties and strengthen the friendship between India and Qatar. The two leaders held discussions on India-Qatar relations, where the PM conveyed his appreciation for the insightful observations of Father Amir on regional and global developments. Father Amir affirmed that India and Qatar share an unwavering bond epitomised by mutual trust and cooperation.

Following the meeting, the Qatari prime minister hosted a dinner for Modi. The Indian prime minister’s second visit to Qatar came days after Qatar released the Indians. The Navy veterans were on October 26 given death sentences by Qatar’s Court of First Instance. The Court of Appeal in the Gulf nation on December 28 commuted the capital punishment and sentenced them to jail terms for varying durations.

In December, Prime Minister Modi met the Qatari Amir on the sidelines of the COP28 Summit in Dubai and discussed the “well-being of the Indian community” in Qatar. PM Modi paid his first visit to Doha in June 2016.

The former Indian Navy personnel apparently faced charges of espionage, but neither the Qatari authorities nor New Delhi made the charges against them public. The trade and energy ties between India and Qatar are on an upswing. Qatar is the largest supplier of LNG to India, accounting for over 48 per cent of India’s global LNG imports.

 India and Qatar Relations

India and Qatar have a good relationship marked by diplomatic cooperation, economic ties, and cultural exchanges. Both countries have diplomatic missions in each other’s capitals, and there have been several high-level visits between the two nations, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Qatar in June 2016 and the Emir of Qatar’s visit to India in March 2015.


Economic cooperation is a key aspect of the relationship. Qatar is one of the largest suppliers of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to India, and Indian companies are involved in various infrastructure projects in Qatar. The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) has also made significant investments in India, particularly in sectors such as real estate and infrastructure.

Cultural exchanges are another important dimension of the relationship. The Indian community in Qatar is one of the largest expatriate communities in the country, and there are several Indian cultural organizations and schools in Qatar. In addition, there have been several cultural events and festivals organized by both countries to promote cultural understanding and cooperation.
