During his visit to India, Vivekananda had closely known the sufferings, pain, poverty, self-respect and lack of education of the common people. Vivekananda reached the rock located about 500 meters away from the beach by swimming on 24 December 1892. He meditated on this rock from 25 to 27 December. He dreamed of a developed India for the future of India here.  This is the same place where he had darshan of Mother India. It was at this place that he dreamed of devoting the rest of his life to the people.

There was a long struggle to build the Vivekananda Memorial on the Vivekananda Rock. Eknath Ranade played a big role in this.
