Supreme Court ordered the release of NewsClick editor, The Supreme Court has provided a big relief to Prabir Purkayastha, the founding editor of Newsclick. Purkayastha, arrested under strict sections of UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act), has been ordered to be released on bail. While ordering the release of the editor of Newsclick, the Supreme Court has also made serious comments about the police methods. Earlier, during the hearing on the arrest of Prabir Purkayastha, the Supreme Court had made strict remarks. The apex court had raised many questions.
The court had asked why the Delhi Police hurried to produce Prabir Purkayastha before the magistrate after his arrest without informing his lawyer. Newsclick editor Prabir Purkayastha was detained under strict sections of UAPA. He was in jail under the provisions of strict law.
Now Supreme Court has provided big relief to Newsclick editor Prabir Purkayastha. The bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice Sandeep Mehta on Wednesday ordered the release of Prabir Purkayastha on bail. Let us tell you that Purkayastha has been seriously accused of receiving funds from China to promote anti-national propaganda. Prabir Purkayastha had approached the Supreme Court challenging his arrest under UAPA.

Newsclick editor Prabir Purkayastha was arrested under the very strict provisions of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. Many serious allegations were made against Purkayastha. While hearing the application of the editor of Newsclick, the Supreme Court said that at the time of arrest, the police had not given any basis to Purkayastha. Therefore Prabir Purkayastha is entitled to bail.
During the last hearing, the Supreme Court had also raised questions on the haste of Delhi Police. The court had said that without informing Purkayastha’s lawyer, he was produced before the magistrate.
