Why the oath is taken?
The President, Prime Minister, Minister, Panch-Sarpanch and those in government service take an oath to maintain the dignity of office, to work with honesty and impartiality and to maintain the sovereignty and integrity of the country under all circumstances. The oath can be taken in any Indian language including Hindi and English. Shankardayal Sharma, the 13th President of our country, read his oath of office in Sanskrit.

What happens if you break an oath?
If a person taking oath for a constitutional post violates the dignity of confidentiality, then there is a special procedure for his removal, which is called impeachment. Generally no criminal case is registered in this, but if a case of embezzlement is made out then a criminal case can be registered.
There is mention of taking oath in India since ancient times. In the Vedic period, sages and sages used to take oath to perform their duties during yagya/religious rituals. It is also mentioned in epics and Puranas. In Ramayana, when Queen Kaikeyi asked King Dasharatha as a boon for Ram’s exile and kingdom for Bharat, Ram took an oath to live in the forest for 14 years to keep his father’s promise.
