US owned ship hit by Houthi rebels off the coast of Yemen

Houthi rebels are continuously retaliating back after Coalition forces of the US and UK strike on the Red sea on them in Yemen. US owned ship hit by Houthi rebels on Monday just off the coast of Yemen in the Gulf of Aden, less than a day after they launched an anti-ship cruise missile toward an American destroyer in the Red Sea.

Trade Operations said the attack happened some 110 miles (177 kilometers) miles southeast of Aden and the ship’s captain reported that the “port side of vessel hit from above by a missile.”

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said authorities are investigating and have advised vessels in transit to exercise “extreme caution”.

The vessel is a Stamford Connecticut-based firm traded on the New York Stock Exchange, owned by Eagle Bulk.

The missile came from near Hodeida, the US said, adding, “An anti-ship cruise missile was fired from Iranian-backed Houthi militant areas of Yemen toward USS Laboon. There were no injuries or damage reported.”

Ambrey, a British maritime risk company, said that a fire broke out on board the Marshall Islands-flagged, US-owned bulk carrier. The company “assessed the attack to have targeted US interests in response to US military strikes on Houthi military positions in Yemen”, Ambrey said. The vessel was “assessed to not be Israel-affiliated”, it said.

Yemen’s Houthi rebels did not immediately acknowledge any attack, though they have fired missiles previously in that area. This comes after Houthis fired an anti-ship cruise missile toward an American destroyer in the Red Sea earlier. The US fighter jet shot it down in the latest attack on global shipping amid Israel’s war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree claimed the attack in a recorded television address that aired Monday night.

“The Yemeni armed forces consider all American and British ships and warships participating in the aggression against our country as hostile targets,” he said.

Retaliation to UK and US owned ship hit by Houthi rebels

Coalition forces of US and UK strikes on the Red sea on Houthis in Yemen after repeated hijacking attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea route. The attack was initiated few days back, it was a lethal attack, ballistic missiles, drones were used in a massive amount. Heavy explosions were reported in the Yemeni capital of Sana’a and the port city of Al Hudaydah.  The airstrikes by US and UK, aimed at destroying Houthi bases in Yemen, has further escalated the conflicts in the area in the midst of the Israel-Hamas war.

Who are Houthis?

The Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah (Supporters of God), are a political and military rebel group based in Yemen. The group originated in the northern part of Yemen and is composed mainly of Zaidi Shia Muslims. The Houthi movement takes its name from its founder, Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi, who led the group until his death in 2004.

The Houthis have been involved in a series of conflicts with the Yemeni government and have sought greater autonomy for their region. The group gained international attention when it took control of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, in September 2014, leading to the ousting of the Yemeni government. This prompted a military intervention by a Saudi-led coalition in 2015, aiming to restore the internationally recognized government of President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi.

The conflict in Yemen has since evolved into a complex and protracted civil war, with various factions and foreign actors involved. The Houthis continue to control significant portions of Yemen, including the capital, and have been engaged in ongoing clashes with both local and international forces. The conflict has resulted in a humanitarian crisis, with widespread displacement, famine, and other hardships affecting the civilian population.
